Former Sokoto State governor and senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Tambuwal announced his defection in a statement on Wednesday night, confirming that he had formally written to his ward chairman to notify the party of his resignation.
The former governor said his decision followed extensive consultations with political associates and supporters, citing the lingering internal crisis within the PDP as the major reason for leaving the party.
According to him, the deepening divisions and leadership disagreements in the party had made it difficult for him to continue as a member.
He stated that although the PDP had played a significant role in his political journey, the current situation in the party necessitated his departure.
“I have formally resigned my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party after deep reflection and consultations,” Tambuwal said.
“The persistent internal crisis, leadership disagreements and growing divisions within the PDP have made it increasingly difficult to continue my membership of the party.”
Tambuwal also announced that he had joined the ADC alongside some of his political allies and supporters.
The move is expected to further reshape opposition alignments ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, as several prominent politicians have recently gravitated toward the ADC as a coalition platform.
Tambuwal previously served as Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives from 2011 to 2015 and later as governor of Sokoto State from 2015 to 2023 before his election to the Senate.
