For decades, the people of Akoko-Edo—one of Nigeria’s oldest and most historically significant Local Government Areas—have stood at a crossroads.

Despite being a land of sophisticated humans, intellectual giants, and vast potential, the quest for truly transformative representation in the House of Representatives has remained elusive.

For too long, the Golden Egg of Igarra, with its massive population and economic weight, has watched from the sidelines.
The entrance of Hon. Otunba Oladele Bankole-Balogun into the 2027 race is not just another political candidacy; it is a “Development Angel” descending into the arena to offer a masterclass in governance, competence, and humanistic compassion.

A Pedigree of Excellence: From Ibadan to Harvard
Otunba Bankole-Balogun is a man whose intellectual depth provides a sturdy foundation for leadership. His academic journey spans the most prestigious institutions in the world:
University of Ibadan: B.Sc. (Hons) in Political Science.
University of London: LLB (Hons) Law.
The College of Law, UK: PGDip. Law.

The Harvard Kennedy School of Executive Education refined his grasp of global governance. As a member of the Nigerian Bar Association, International Bar Association, and the Chartered Institute of Taxation, he possesses the legal and fiscal literacy required to craft laws that would actually move the needle for his constituency.

In Edo State political cycle, Bankole-Balogun has been nicknamed the “100 Billion Naira” Leader. For others, promises in politics are cheap, but for Bankole-Balogun, performance is measurable. As the former Chairman of the Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS), Otunba achieved what many thought impossible.

Under his stewardship, Edo State’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) surpassed the ₦100 billion mark within a single year—a historic milestone.
He didn’t achieve this through high-handedness, but through modernization. He deployed technology-driven systems, improved transparency, and expanded the tax base while reducing leakages. This is the “Unmatched Competence” Akoko-Edo needs: a leader who understands how to generate, manage, and attract wealth to his community.

Bridging Private Success and Public Service
Bankole-Balogun’s career is a bridge between the corporate boardrooms of Europe and the grassroots of Nigeria. From rising through the ranks at Cadbury Nigeria to holding senior roles at global giants Pfizer UK and Merck Sharp & Dohme, he mastered the art of stakeholder engagement.

His entrepreneurial spirit led to the birth of Alphabet Group, creating jobs in education and real estate, while his role on the board of Allen Angus Ltd puts him at the forefront of the Fintech and Entertainment revolution. He isn’t just seeking a seat; he is bringing a global network of investment and innovation to the doorstep of Akoko-Edo.

The Man Behind the Mandate: Humanity and Humility
Beyond the resumes and the revenue charts lies the heart of a philanthropist. Otunba’s life is defined by humanistic compassion. He understands that representation is not about the perks of office, but about the people of Akoko-Edo who have felt luckless for far too long.

His decision to resign in March 2026, in strict compliance with the directive of Governor Monday Okpebholo, demonstrates a solid character and an unwavering respect for the rule of law. He is a man of “Unequaled Courage” who is ready to challenge the status quo to ensure the people of Akoko-Edo ably representated in the National Assembly.

*2027: The Year of Liberation*
Akoko-Edo deserves a representative who matches their sophistication. They need a seasoned professional who can argue their case on the floor of the House with the precision of a lawyer and the vision of a Harvard-trained administrator.
Hon. Otunba Oladele Bankole-Balogun is the “icing on the cake” of the Akoko-Edo political struggle. He is the bridge to a future where development is not a favour, but a standard.

Steve Lawani contributed this piece from Igarra.
