Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved the appointment of Dr. Mairo Mandara and 23 others as chairmen and members of the Governing Councils for the three Colleges of Nursing Sciences located in Maiduguri, Gwoza and Monguno.
The appointments were announced in a statement issued by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Spokesperson, Dauda Iliya.
According to the statement, Dr. Mairo Mandara, the Chief Adviser to the governor, was appointed Chairman of the Governing Council of the College of Nursing Sciences, Gwoza; retired local government secretary and seasoned nurse, Hajiya Hauwa Mustapha, will serve as Chairman of the College of Nursing Sciences, Maiduguri; while retired Provost of the Maiduguri College of Nursing Sciences, Rukaiya Shettima Kamfut, will chair the Governing Council of the College of Nursing Sciences, Monguno.
The governor said the appointments were made in line with the provisions of the laws enacted by the Borno State House of Assembly establishing the three institutions, which mandate the constitution of governing councils for their administration.
Zulum said the nominees were selected based on their track records in public service, professional competence and commitment to community development.
“The appointments are based on the nominees’ proven integrity in public service, their educational background and their demonstrated commitment to community development,” the governor said.
He added that the establishment of the governing councils would strengthen institutional governance and ensure efficient management of the nursing colleges.
“The constitution of these councils is part of our broader efforts to strengthen healthcare manpower development and improve the quality of medical services across Borno State,” Zulum stated.
According to the enabling law, each governing council will consist of a chairman and seven other members. Four of the members are statutory, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Human Services, the Director of Nursing Services in the Ministry of Health, the Provost of the respective college and the Registrar who will serve as Secretary of the council.
The remaining three members represent community interests and are drawn from the three senatorial districts of Borno State.
For the College of Nursing Sciences, Gwoza, the council will be chaired by Dr. Mairo Mandara, with Shettima Abdulazeez representing Borno Central, Kaka Ali representing Borno North and Mamman Wakili Walama representing Borno South, alongside statutory members.
At the College of Nursing Sciences, Maiduguri, Hajiya Hauwa Mustapha will chair the council, while Loskuri Gana Grema (Borno Central), Shuwaram Lawan Kabu (Borno South) and Babagana Bulama (Borno North) will serve as members.
For the College of Nursing Sciences, Monguno, Rukaiya Shettima Kamfut will serve as chairman, with Mohammed Bukar Badiya (Borno Central), Musa Ahmadu (Borno North) and Adamu Abdu Balbaya (Borno South) representing community interests.
The governor expressed confidence that the new governing councils would provide the necessary leadership to reposition the institutions for improved training of healthcare professionals in the state.
