A civic group, Oyo Defender, has rejected reported moves to field a former Oyo State Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Planning as a governorship contender in 2027, citing unresolved allegations of financial impropriety.

In a press statement signed by its secretary,

Adedosu Ifaponle, the group said it “expresses deep concern over emerging political maneuvers aimed at promoting former Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Planning in the administration of late Oyo State governor, Abiola Ajimobi as a contender in the forthcoming 2027 Oyo State governorship election.”

Ifaponle, warned that the state cannot afford leadership tainted by controversy “at a critical moment when the people of Oyo State are demanding credible, transparent, and people-focused leadership.”

The group described it as “alarming that individuals facing serious public allegations of financial impropriety are being positioned for the highest office in the state.”

The statement specifically referenced “reports in the public domain” linking “Mr. Adekanmbi to an alleged ₦30 billion financial matter involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).”

While noting that it acknowledges “the principle of presumption of innocence,” the group insisted that “such weighty allegations cannot be ignored or dismissed without clear and transparent resolution.”

“Leadership, especially at the level of governor, requires not only competence but unquestionable integrity and public trust.

“The management of state resources is a sacred duty, and any aspirant seeking such responsibility must be beyond reproach in both record and reputation”, it says.

The group called on relevant anti-corruption agencies to ensure that all pending allegations are thoroughly investigated and openly addressed.

“The people of Oyo State deserve clarity, accountability, and assurance that those seeking to govern them meet the highest ethical standards.”
