The Security Situation Room on Friday strongly criticised the reported release of over 700 suspected terrorists by Nigerian Defence Chiefs under what authorities describe as a “non-kinetic approach” to counterterrorism, warning that such actions could legitimise terrorism in the country.

In a statement issued by the Convener of the group, Barrister Douglas Ogbankwa, expressed deep concern over the development, describing it as both alarming and contradictory.
“The Security Situation Room is alarmed by the recent release of over 700 terrorists under the non-descript non-kinetic approach to terrorism, which is indeed an official endorsement of terrorism,” Ogbankwa said.
He further criticised what he described as a disparity between the treatment of fallen military personnel and individuals linked to insurgent activities.
“It is ironical that while our Generals and Colonels killed by terrorists are buried in solemn ceremonies at the late General Mai Malari Military Cemetery, those associated with the insurgents responsible for their deaths are released with pomp, ceremony and fanfare in the presence of foreign dignitaries,” he added.
The group argued that granting clemency to terror suspects undermines justice for victims and could send the wrong signal to both perpetrators and the public.
According to the statement, “the optics of celebrating the release of terror suspects while military widows mourn in silence sends a dangerous message that terrorism pays.”
The Security Situation Room called on the Nigerian Defence Headquarters to ensure greater transparency and accountability in its counterterrorism approach.
“We urge the Defence Headquarters to halt all non-transparent releases of terror suspects without public trial, publish the names and evidence against each released individual, and prioritise victims and fallen soldiers in all counter-terrorism policies,” Ogbankwa stated.
The group maintained that inconsistencies in handling terrorism cases could undermine the broader fight against insurgency.
“The war against terror cannot be won with contradictions. You cannot bury soldiers with gun salutes and release their killers with state receptions,” he said.
