A civil society organisation, the Taraba Integrity and Good Governance Group, has defended Mr George Sabo Adi over allegations linked to a student scholarship dispute, describing the claims against him as misleading and lacking factual basis.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Ezra Yusuf Tanko, the group said its independent review showed that Adi’s support for a student, Miss Adda Manga, was a private humanitarian intervention and not connected to any government scholarship scheme.

According to the group, the assistance, which began during the administration of former Governor Darius Ishaku, covered the student’s education at Kwararafa University from IJMB level up to 300 level in Mass Communication.

The group stated that it found no evidence to support claims that Adi withheld scholarship funds, noting instead that the support was withdrawn following concerns over the student’s alleged misconduct.

“It is inaccurate to describe the situation as a withheld scholarship. The intervention was voluntary and privately funded, and was discontinued after repeated concerns over inappropriate conduct,” the statement read.
The organisation further raised concerns over a social media post allegedly made by the student, in which she portrayed herself as being in a purported marital relationship with Governor Agbu Kefas.
It described the claim as false, stating that the governor does not know the student and has never met her.
The group added that while some had dismissed the post as a joke, it was capable of causing public misunderstanding and tension, including within the governor’s family.
On allegations of religious bias against Adi, the group dismissed them as unfounded, noting that he was aware of the student’s background before offering assistance and that her family had expressed appreciation at the time.
The group also faulted the role played by Mr Hinkon Yusuf Garsheya, identified as a serving officer of the Nigeria Police Force, accusing him of amplifying a one-sided account without verification.
It said such action fell short of the standards of professionalism expected of police personnel, particularly in matters capable of damaging reputations.
On claims that Adi assaulted the officer, the group said the allegations were unsubstantiated, adding that its findings indicated he honoured a police invitation lawfully.
The organisation expressed concern that the issue was being sensationalised to attract public sympathy and mislead the public.
It called on stakeholders, including the media and civil society groups, to verify facts before publication and avoid amplifying unverified claims.
The group also backed calls for an independent investigation by relevant authorities to establish the facts and ensure accountability.
