Chief David Sabo Kente, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Taraba State, on Thursday explained why he turned down an endorsement offer from party faithful to contest the 2027 governorship election.
Kente also disclosed that the supporters offered to purchase the nomination form for him, citing their dissatisfaction with the Governor Agbu Kefas-led administration in the state.
The former governorship aspirant, however, said he is still consulting stakeholders to make the right decision in the interest of the party.
He called on supporters to back President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, noting that it would attract more development to Taraba State.
“I am still consulting on whether to contest the 2027 governorship election. I have asked my supporters and APC loyalists who came to endorse me and purchase the governorship form to hold on.
“I am conscious of the fact that my zone has produced the governor for three consecutive terms and is expected to complete 16 years before another power shift. I understand their grievances over Kefas’ poor governance and alleged neglect of long-standing party members, but I must ensure that party interest is considered before any personal decision,” Kente said.
Kente also expressed dismay over what he described as “sole administratorship” in the governance style of Governor Kefas in the state.
“It is unfortunate that what is happening in Taraba State appears like a sole administratorship, with one individual presiding over the affairs of the state under a democratic system. I call on party members to remain faithful and support President Tinubu to attract more development to Taraba,” he added.
Meanwhile, over 500 APC members across the 16 local governments in the state, including party officials, have called on Kente to accept their endorsement and contest the 2027 governorship election.
The party members alleged that the Kefas administration is running the state to the point of collapse and needs to be rescued.
They also threatened to support a governorship candidate from another political party if Kente declines to contest the election.
“We will be compelled to support and vote for any governorship candidate from another party if Chief Kente refuses to contest the election. We want a credible candidate who will rescue Taraba from the current situation.
“The Kefas-led administration does not deserve the support of any progressive-minded citizens. We call on Tarabans to remain vigilant and take a decisive stance against Kefas’ second-term bid,” the APC members stated.
