The Gombe Network of Civil Society Organisations (GONET) has condemned the increasing cases of child abduction, kidnapping, and violence against children across Nigeria, describing the trend as a serious threat to the safety and future of the nation’s children.
In a statement jointly signed on Thursday by the Chairman of GONET, Ambassador Ibrahim Yusuf, and the Secretary, Dr Ben Maina, the network expressed concern over what it described as the growing insecurity affecting children in different parts of the country.
According to the statement, the abduction of children constitutes a gross violation of human rights and undermines efforts to provide a safe and secure environment for young people.
“GONET strongly condemns the increasing cases of child abduction, kidnapping, and other forms of violence against children occurring across the country,” the statement read.
“The abduction of innocent children is a grave violation of human rights and poses a serious threat to the safety, well-being, and future of our society. Children deserve to grow in a secure environment free from fear, violence, and exploitation.”
The organisation called on security agencies to intensify efforts aimed at preventing such crimes, rescuing victims, and ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice.
“We call on security agencies at all levels to intensify efforts toward preventing these crimes, rescuing victims, and ensuring that perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice,” the statement stated.
The group also urged parents, guardians, schools, community leaders, religious institutions, and members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to relevant authorities.
GONET further appealed to governments at all levels to strengthen child protection systems and address the underlying causes of insecurity.
“Governments at all levels must strengthen child protection mechanisms, improve community policing, and invest in measures that address the root causes of insecurity,” the statement added.
The network expressed solidarity with families and communities affected by child abduction and kidnapping, assuring them of its continued advocacy for the protection of children’s rights.
“As a network committed to promoting human rights, peace, and social justice, GONET stands in solidarity with affected families and communities during this difficult time. We reaffirm our commitment to advocating for the protection and welfare of every child,” the statement noted.
The organisation called on Nigerians to work collectively toward safeguarding children and ensuring a safer future for the country.
“Together, let us protect our children and safeguard the future of our nation,” the statement concluded.
