Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, Danmajen Gombe, has once again demonstrated his penchant for rewarding competence, diligence, and loyalty by nominating Honourable Muhammad Gambo Magaji for re-appointment as Commissioner in Gombe State. The nomination, which marks Magaji’s third return to the State Executive Council, was widely received as a strategic move to sustain fiscal discipline and economic stability in the state.

The announcement, conveyed from Government House, Gombe, underscores the Governor’s satisfaction with Magaji’s stewardship during his immediate past tenure as Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development. For many political observers in the state, the decision reflects Inuwa Yahaya’s governing philosophy: “retain what works, improve what must.”

Muhammad Gambo Magaji is no stranger to Gombe’s governance architecture. A seasoned administrator and chartered finance professional, he first served in the Inuwa Yahaya administration as the pioneer Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development when the government took office in 2019. His return for a third term is unprecedented in the current cabinet and signals strong institutional trust.

Magaji’s personality has been one of his greatest assets in public service. Colleagues describe him as calm, methodical, and unassuming. Unlike the archetype of flamboyant political appointees, he is known for his quiet efficiency, accessibility to civil servants, and a working style that prioritizes data over rhetoric. Within the Ministry of Finance, he earned the reputation of a “civil servant’s commissioner.”

His approach to leadership is rooted in accountability. Throughout his tenure, Magaji insisted on transparency in budget implementation and strengthened the link between financial planning and actual service delivery. He was often seen in late-night budget review sessions, interrogating line items and demanding value for money on every capital project.
Performance-wise, his record at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development is difficult to ignore. Under his watch, Gombe State consistently improved its ranking on the States’ Fiscal Transparency, Accountability and Sustainability, SFTAS, program. The state also recorded successive improvements in Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, moving from a narrow tax base to a more diversified and technology-driven collection system.
One of Magaji’s landmark achievements was the institutionalization of budget credibility. For the first time in years, the state began to implement a high percentage of its approved capital budget. Contractors and Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, noted that releases became more predictable, reducing project abandonment and boosting public confidence.
He also played a central role in positioning Gombe for access to multilateral funding. By ensuring compliance with World Bank, Federal Government, and other donor fiscal benchmarks, Gombe unlocked critical resources for infrastructure, health, and education. Development partners often cited the Ministry’s documentation and reporting standards as “best in class” among peer states.
Beyond figures and indices, Magaji championed economic planning with a human face. He coordinated the state’s economic recovery strategies during post-COVID inflationary pressures and worked closely with the Ministry of Budget to align spending with Governor Inuwa’s “10-Year Development Plan.” His emphasis on data-driven policy helped the state avoid wasteful expenditures.
Staff of the Ministry recall his open-door policy. Young accountants, budget officers, and economists were encouraged to present ideas without fear. That culture, many say, improved morale and reduced leakages. “He treated finance not as a vault to be guarded, but as a tool to build,” one director noted.
Politically, the nomination for a third time is a strong vote of confidence from the Governor. In an administration that has seen several cabinet reshuffles, only a few officials have been retained across multiple terms. Magaji’s inclusion suggests that the Governor intends to maintain continuity in fiscal policy as Gombe enters a new phase of economic expansion.
Stakeholders across Gombe have reacted positively. Civil society groups focused on budget monitoring described the nomination as “a win for accountability.” Business community leaders said retaining Magaji sends a signal of policy consistency to investors. Within the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Gombe, it is being read as recognition of loyalty mixed with performance.
As he prepares to return to the Executive Council, expectations will be high. The challenges of revenue volatility, rising inflation, and the need to finance Governor Inuwa’s second-term agenda will test his experience again. However, if his past is a guide, Honourable Muhammad Gambo Magaji will approach the assignment with the same discipline, humility, and results-oriented mindset that earned him this rare third nomination.
In the final analysis, the Governor’s decision is less about politics and more about performance. By re-nominating Magaji, His Excellency Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has told Gombe people that competence will remain the currency of his administration. For Magaji, it is both an honour and a charge to do even more for the state he has served with distinction.
