The library in our pocket, the emptiness in our heads, by Destiny O. Enabulele

Outrage is boiling after the Tinubu-led government allocated N22.15 billion in the 2026 budget to build and renovate 106 palaces nationwide.

At the same time, ASUU is striking, hospitals lack basic drugs, and fuel is ₦1,000 plus. That is not leadership. That is insult.

First, priorities. Palaces are symbols of culture and tradition, and we respect them. But should government money be the first responder to roof leaks in palaces while classrooms leak on pupils? ₦22.15bn can equip 300 PHCs, fix rural roads, or clear pension arrears.

Second, optics. “Emilokan” was supposed to mean competence and renewal. Instead it is reading like “it’s my turn to spend.” In a recession, the optics of gilding thrones while citizens queue for rice is dangerous. It feeds the narrative that government is distant.

Third, sustainability. Traditional rulers are custodians, not contractors. Let communities, and CSR lead palace projects. Federal money should go to things only the federal government can do: security, infrastructure, and the economy.

We need our kings honored. But we need our people alive first.
Honor tradition. But don’t bankrupt the future to do it.
