Singapore was expelled from Malaysia in 1965 and wretched. No natural resources. No water. No hinterland. Sixty years after, it is one of the most powerful countries on the planet earth.
Nigeria gained independence in 1960 with oil, gas, land, rivers, and 200 plus million people. Sixty years after, we rank 56th among the world’s 60 poorest countries by GDP per capita.
The difference was not luck. The difference was leadership.
Lee Kuan Yew had no oil to sell, so he sold discipline, education, and vision. He fought corruption like war. He built ports, schools, and factories. He told his people hard truths and they believed him.
Nigerian leaders had oil to steal, so they sold rice, stipends, and excuses. They built nothing that lasts. They fought opposition, not poverty. They told us lies and we clapped.
Singapore had no resources, so they invested in people. Nigeria had resources, so we invested in consumption. Singapore planned for the future. Nigeria plans for 4 years.
Expulsion made Singapore hungry. Independence made Nigeria lazy.
Today, Singaporeans don’t beg for ₦20k. They own banks, airlines, and ports in other countries. Nigerians queue for bags of rice.
The lesson is simple: Nations are not poor because of what they lack. Nations are poor because of what their leaders lack: shame, strategy, and sacrifice.
Lee Kuan Yew proved that geography is not destiny. Leadership is.
If Nigeria had Singapore’s leaders, we would be exporting tech, not youths. If we had Singapore’s shame, we would not be having President with a drug case in United States.
Sixty years is enough excuses. The question is not what Singapore has. The question is: what have Nigerian leaders done with what God gave us?
