The Kano/Jigawa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has recorded its highest-ever monthly revenue collection, generating more than ₦14 billion in July 2026, as it intensified its crackdown on smuggling and other cross-border crimes.
The record monthly collection formed part of the ₦88.92 billion revenue generated by the command, while contraband goods with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦2.15 billion were also intercepted within the period under review.
The Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Usman Adamu, disclosed the figures on Friday, September 4, 2026, during a press briefing at the Customs House, Bompai, Kano.
Adamu attributed the performance to sustained enforcement, improved compliance and the command’s efforts to facilitate legitimate trade while protecting the nation’s economy and security.
He said the command’s seizures included foreign food products, vehicles, diverted transit trucks and 712,690 tablets of unregistered pharmaceutical products.
The pharmaceutical products, he disclosed, were handed over to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for further regulatory action.
Adamu also revealed that smugglers had adopted increasingly sophisticated methods to evade Customs checks, including the use of fake government service licence plates on vehicles.
In another major enforcement operation, the command intercepted undeclared foreign currencies comprising $73,300, £15,975 and 827,800 Saudi Riyals.
The funds, alongside two suspects arrested in connection with the incident, were transferred to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigation.
The command also processed suspects allegedly linked to the vandalisation and movement of high-voltage aluminium conductors for transfer to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Adamu further highlighted the command’s landmark seizure in August of 48 endangered wildlife species, including chimpanzees, gorillas and wild cats.
He described the operation as the largest single wildlife interception recorded in the history of the Nigeria Customs Service, underscoring the command’s expanding role in combating environmental and wildlife trafficking.
The Acting Controller urged legitimate importers, exporters and other business operators to take advantage of Customs’ trade facilitation initiatives, particularly the Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) scheme, to improve compliance and ease legitimate commerce.
He, however, warned smugglers and other operators engaged in illegal cross-border activities that the command would continue to enforce the nation’s border laws without compromise.
Adamu assured legitimate businesses of the command’s commitment to facilitating lawful trade while maintaining robust enforcement against activities capable of undermining national security, public health and economic development.
