In a resounding endorsement of Nigeria’s ongoing healthcare transformation, Patient Safety Africa has issued its official World Patient Safety Day (WPSD) 2026 message, celebrating significant strides in national health reforms while laying out a bold roadmap for equity, efficiency, and workforce welfare.
Delivered by Prof. Asekhame Sonny Isemede—President of Patient Safety Africa, Consultant at County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT), and Specialist Advisor to England’s Care Quality Commission (CQC)—the address was formally presented to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare leadership, including Coordinating Minister Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate and Minister of State Dr. Iziaq Kunle Salako.
The address highlights how far Nigeria’s health sector has advanced under the Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in clinical governance, quality improvement (QI), and institutional capacity building. Since 2022, a strategic partnership between the Ministry’s Patient Safety Desk and Patient Safety Africa has trained a burgeoning cadre of public and private healthcare professionals.
These experts now actively shape international conferences and quality initiatives, cementing Nigeria’s position as a rising continental leader in patient safety.
This progress has been heavily reinforced through global and regional alliances with bodies such as the WHO Patient Safety Flagship Office, Joint Commission International (JCI), ISQua, COHSASA, and NHS England.
These milestones will be prominently featured in the upcoming “Solutions from Africa” initiative, answering Sir Liam Donaldson’s landmark 2010 call for fortified African patient safety structures.
To lock in these historic gains, the message urges structural elevation by upgrading the current Patient Safety Desk into a full-fledged Directorate of Patient Safety and Clinical Governance within the Federal Ministry.
Furthermore, the report champions inclusive multidisciplinary leadership, emphasizing that modern healthcare relies equally on doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory scientists, allied health professionals, and administrators.
It calls for merit-based pathways and the embedding of “Just Culture” principles across all health institutions.
Addressing system efficiency and workforce resilience, the address underscores that optimizing limited resources through streamlined governance, shared procurement, and regional collaboration can unlock critical savings for reinvestment.
