The skill acquisition programme, which include building, aluminium pot making, knitting and textile designing, bag and shoe making, soap and cream making, is expected to equip inmates with the relevant skills to become law-abiding citizens and self-reliant on discharge.

In a press statement made available to our correspondent by  the

Command Public Relations Officer, ASC Gonji Palang, the Controller of Correctional Service, Gombe State Command, Ahmadu Adamu, commended the officer in charge of upgrading the vocational capacity to a standard that engaged inmates on meaningful ventures that would aid their re-integration into society, noting that such is worthy of emulation.

“I want to appeal to officers-in-charge of the other custodial centres in the command to emulate this gesture,” he stated.

In response, the officer-in-charge of Billiri Custodial Centre, Christopher Jen, said the skill acquisition programme was in line with the service’s mandate of empowering inmates while in custody to enable them become self-reliant after the completion of their terms.

The programme has 34 inmates training in building, 12 in aluminium pot making, four in knitting, 23 in bag and shoe making, 12 in soap and cream making and 92 in textile design.
