Chima Azubuike, Gombe
Gombe State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Hon. Julius Ishaya Lepes, on Monday appointed Bashama Yusuf, Special Aide on Strategy and Development.
Speaking at the event to commemorate the appointment, the commissioner said the appointment is geared towards enriching the prospects of the ministry, in attracting the much needed support of partners for the economic prosperity of Gombe youths.
According to him, “My leadership class has taught me that what makes you a good leader is not necessarily when you do everything by yourself but your ability to identify people that can help you or assemble a team knowing the strength of everyone and putting them together and charging them to achieve the desired goal.”
He said as a commissioner that is targeted at delivering the campaign promises of governor Inuwa Yahaya he needs an aide that will support him in carrying out certain responsibilities.
“Because I have a very strong objective of generating the required impact that will translate to better life to the youths of Gombe state. I felt I needed a veteran who will help me, someone who is in the field, someone who knows the nittygrity of the area.”
While appraising the advantages of the appointment, Lepes noted that he and Yusuf have had a long standing relationship built on trust.
“We all know that Gombe state resources can’t take care of the young people in Gombe state and we are also aware that there are all manner of interventions with other governments and partners that is not easy to unlock, you need a technical person that will help in unlocking the opportunities so that you can have flow of resources from elsewhere to come into Gombe state to augment what government is doing, ” he added.
On his part, Sani Jauro, appreciated the commissioner for identifying a talent in Yusuf adding that the Special Aide is one person that brings solution to bear.
He said, “With him (Bashama Yusuf) on board he will help you to meander between civil servants, the donor world and of course politicians within the set goals. I was happy when you were appointed together with honourable Commissioner for Environment Dr. Hussaina as commissioners and with the assembly of young people like Bashama, I want to assure you there is going to be light at the end of the tunnel.”
Also Speaking the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports Mrs Aishatu Sani Bilyabu, called on the appointee to give his best.
She added, “You have a lot of work to do and this is a challenge. We know you will deliver, do take everyone along we will support you to succeed.”
In his response, Bashama Yusuf assured that he will give his best in the actualization of plans and mission of the ministry.
Yusuf who until his appointment is the Lead volunteer, Dandalin Matasa Youth Initiative, with over a decade experience in active roles in civil society in Nigeria, said the task is for everyone, adding that the appointment is first of it kind in the ministry.
“This is the first time I will be given an opportunity officially and formally to work in the ministry and I sincerely appreciate it. This is an opportunity for inclusive service, young people first. What we will try to achieve in the shortest possible time, is to ensure that young people and their issues are prioritized. The youth population is in the majority and any society that neglects 60% of it population is Negligent. The more investment we for our young people the better for us. I see this as a sacrifice and as a challenge,” he said.
