Gombe State Government on Thursday, indicated interest to mop surplus food to ensure continuous supply chain at affordable price.
According to the commissioner for Agriculture, Mohammed Getado, the government can only buy excess food when the price is affordable to prevent hike in agricultural commodities.
Getado disclosed this during a sectoral media parley to commemorate Gombe at 24 and Nigeria at 60, chaired by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibrahim Njodi.
He said, “The government is intending to buy the excess produce depending on the prices but if the prices are much government may not come in to buy.
“This is because as soon as the government come in the price may go up where by the farmers and public may continue to complain but if the price is low government will come to buy the excess to keep and later sell to the masses.”
While warning farmers about their decision to sell their farm produce from the farm, he described it as bad.
“We are calling on our farmers to desist from selling their produce on the farm despite the good offers they are just being deceived by outsiders because there are a number of states that were unable to farm this year due to the security situation. Unfortunately farmers are selling their own produce at the farm, this is very bad but they should wait for the right time,” he said.
