Gombe approves N8.4b for upgrade, construction of 27 markets.
Gombe State has targeted 27 markets across the state for upgrade, adding that the construction is estimated at N8.4 billion.
However, this was part of resolutions by the state executive council meeting, presided over by the state helmsman, Inuwa Yahaya, at the council chamber.
Revealing this at a news briefing, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Julius Ishaya and his Commerce, Tourism counterpart, Nasiru Aliyu shortly after the Exco meeting.
Ishaya noted that the declaration of a state of emergency in water supply, sanitation and hygiene is in line with federal government’s directives.
According to him, “The council has graciously, given approval and this will happen soon. It commenced from the national level and the state has been called upon to key in; only 34 states have dealt with the case of open defecation. So you can see it is an urgent matter an emergency.”
Also speaking, Aliyu said the council approved N370.3million for the consultancy, designing, bill of quantity and monitoring of the 27 markets.
“Council gave approval for the engagement of consultant and the approval of the sum attached to it. N370.3 million was budgeted for the consultants saddled with the responsibility of designing, supervising, monitoring. The markets are designated all over the state. We have assessed them and those that needed to be upgraded will be upgraded. The contract sum is N8.4 billion which has been approved.
He explained that 10 of the markets will be model markets to be constructed new, while the remaining 17 will undergo reconstruction.
The commerce and tourism commissioner, added that in taking the decision to construct 27 markets, all stakeholders were involved.
“We engaged stakeholders in each of the areas on how best to build the markets to meet their needs and peculiarities,” he said.
On the issues of compensation, Aliyu added that, “if it is discovered that the payment will be too high, other locations to sites will be searched for. It has been observed that no effort was made in improving the living conditions of the people. Majority of our people are farmers and they go to the market; you find that a farmer takes his grain to the market but when there is rain, will have no where to hide, in the governor’s attempt to ensure dividends of democracy is delivered he decided that all the markets should be given facelift, to improve on the revenue capacity of the state.”
