Gombe settles 120 land owners with N97.4 million

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, said that no fewer than 120 affected families would be settled with N97.4M for gully work which extends about 7.5km.
Yahaya made this disclosure on Tuesday, during the presentation of cheques to affected households of Gombe State University, Malam Inna Sabon Fegi, erosion project under the Nigeria Erosion Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP).
The governor also assured residents of his administration’s resolve to make life easy, adding that the project will enhance their economic condition.
He added that this project is part of the lasting efforts at arresting the worsening environmental situation in the state.
He said, As you all are aware this gully covers about 7.5 km in length. This has prolonged the suffering of the people. We have paid compensation worth 97.4 million naira, to 120 individuals whom are directly impacted by the project. We are doing this in line with world bank best practices as well as to demonstrate our commitment to improve the lives of our people.”
Also speaking, Commissioner for Environmen and Forestry Resources Hussaina Goje, said this effort is part of the government’s uncommon stride.
Goje revealed that the project is a brain child of the government’s N500m counterpart funding geared towards arresting erosion challenges in the state.
