Gombe, others partner United Nations towards ending hunger, malnutrition in North East

Gombe state Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, alongside his Taraba, Adamawa states counterparts have committed to collaborate with United Nations in ending hunger in North East.

Speaking on Thursday, at North East Zonal Food Systems Exploratory Dialogue for Adamawa, Gombe and Taraba States which is part of the strategies deployed by the United Nations towards achieving food security, ending hunger and improving nutrition and promoting sustainable agriculture for people, Yahaya said the dialogue was in line with the developmental priorities of the Geo-political zone.
Represented by Deputy Governor of the State, Dr. Manassah Jatau, he revealed that dialogue would help the region take stock and intensify action towards improving nutrition security.

Yahaya said, “Reducing hunger and prevalence of malnutrition in line with Nigeria’s National Food and Nutrition Policy .
“It will also be an enabler for a more inclusive and healthier food systems, encourage a collaborative approach towards building a sustainable food systems and accelerate our march towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”
While outlining the negative impact of Boko Haram activities, he noted that it had negative impact on the food security of the region.
“We are all aware that, despite our enormous potential, our region has an unenviable Human Development Indicators due to our inability to tap these potential. In addition, over the past few years, the Boko haram Insurgency has further exercerbated this gloomy picture and for us in Gombe, the massive influx of people from conflict areas that surround us given that we border all states of the north east region.
“The Government and people of Gombe, Adamawa and Taraba states are fully determined to maximize this timely opportunity to brainstorms and harness ideas on how to tackle the food security and improve Food system in the region. I commend and appreciate all the development partners for their tireless support to the North East states,” the governor added.
