Filiya/Shongom Districts: 50 houses, woman burnt in Gombe

No fewer than fifty (50) houses were burnt with one woman feared dead in a land dispute involving Filiya and Shongom districts in Shongom Local Government Area of Gombe State.
Announcing this on Monday, in a news briefing after a security council meeting presided by governor Muhammadu Yahaya, Mai Kaltungo; Engr. Saleh Mohammed, alongside Internal Security and Information Commissioners Adamu Kupto and Julius Ishaya, said the incident was caused as a result of a land tussle.
Mohammed explained, “In Shongom Local Government we have 6 districts and the problem that occured is between a small portion of Filiya and Shongom district.
“It does not affect the whole of Shongom Local Government, in which some houses were burnt and one loss of life, woman was sick and couldn’t get out of her residence and her house was set on fire.
While decrying the impact of the clash, the Paramount ruler stressed that there would not be a repeat of such, noting that he had assured the governor.
“We thank the governor so much, we have never had that kind of problem in Shongom Local Government. I have promised the governor we will not allow anything of such again.
“The problem that occurred has taken place but we will continue to sensitise our people, so that they can see the development we have achieved during the two years period of governor Inuwa Yahaya.
“There was no school before there but now there is a school, and alot has happened within this two years and we don’t want to lose track of the progress.
“So I have promised the governor that such things will never happen again, I will do everything within my capacity as the Mai Kaltungo to bring sanity and peace, as we have always done,” the monarch added.
Also, Ishaya revealed that the ban on militia, hunter groups would be reinforced, adding that council noted the extent of damage.
“Based on security report, we are talking about over 50 houses that were burnt, including food and other essential items of the people. Council condemns the carnage inflicted on the people of both Shongom and Pero.
“Council directs the immediate engagement of all relevant stakeholders under the leadership of the Mai Kaltungo to restore peace. Council has directed security agencies to bring perpetrators of this act to book. Council also reiterated that the banning of militia or hunters group stands,” Ishaya hinted.
