DON’T WAIT TO REAP WHAT YOU SOW
by Akintola Oluwatobi
Children of nowadays are kids of digital generation. They can hardly imagine a world without the social media, internet, smartphones, games and apps. The internet now play a pivotal role on social relationship. More people now meet online to interact and hook up, reason why dating sites and social media sites are flourishing. Words of mouth is fast evolving to world of mouths.
Internet provides a smarter and easier ways of getting things done. Because of the internet many barriers are broken. Children can now get answers to puzzles they could have asked their parents on the internet. Children-parents relationship now hang on a thin line. While they are closer to you physically yet they are faraway with other people in a distant location. When they enjoy a good relationship with the distance friends, you feel the buzz, energy, overconfidence and happiness they radiate around you. When they have a strain relationship closer friends feel the brunt.
Look forward to seeing names like BESTIE, JOY GIVER GIVER, LOML on their contact.
Social media usage is triggered by two may characteristics which are innate to digital kids. Curiosity; they want to know what others have or do, Exhibitionism; they also want to show others what they have or do. Children now have information than you think or know at their age. They are exposed to porn as young as 10 years or below. And guess what what they know, they are curious to practice. It is heartbreaking for you to know that, this things are happening right under your nose. They have their siblings and neighbors at their disposal.
If you still think handing over a smart device with an uncontrolled access to a kid is pampering, you are doing yourself a great disservice.
Know what they are doing per time, barge into their room( eleven years old boy was caught watching threesome porn video through this), disrupt their solitude(of your kid will not miss the slightest opportunity to evade your presence for solitude, there is fire on your mountain), check their browsing history, profile their friends online and offline, ensure they don’t stay in the convenience room longer than enough and most importantly control their access to the internet. We will talk about controlling children access to the internet in the next part.
Don’t wait to reap the negligence you sow.!
