Gombe man rescued after 7 hours stay on Telecoms mast
A 28-year-old man identified as Umar Abubakar, on Sunday spent over 7 hours on a telecom service point mast following an alleged refusal of his fiancee’s father to approve his marriage with the daughter.
Eye witnesses told our correspondent that Umar, climbed the peak of a telecommunications mast, located at Checheniya in Gombe metropolis, since 7am and refused plea by security agencies, neighbours to come down, including the efforts made by the Gombe LG boss, Aliyu Haruna.
Abubakar requested that he would like the governor to come to the scene of the incidence before he could alight from about 100 metre mast, he climbed.
His neighbour who identified himself as Abdullahi Danladi, told our correspondent that Abubakar, had once engaged his father- in- law in discussion and made threats which includes climbing and killing himself.
Danladi said, “People thought he was joking but he made his threat possible early this morning. For hours neighbours have been pleading that he should come down to no avail.”
He added, “Umar may be have having emotional and psychological issues for climbing this mast which is over 100metres high.”
Other unconfirmed sources debunked the notion that Abubakar’s attempted suicide had links with marriage, adding that he has psychological challenges, Aladeen Mohammed who finally persuaded his long time friend to come down at about 3pm said it was after he promised to meet part of his requests.
“Abubakar was accused of stealing N10,000, but after offering him cigarette, tramadol, it was then he agreed to come down. I’m not sure he stole as he was accused wrongly.
“I feel very excited to have been the one to bring him down, even after the local government chairman had pleaded with him,” Mohammed said.
When contacted Public Relations Officer (PRO), Gombe State Police Command, SP Mary Malum confirmed that Abubakar has been successfully rescued.
Malum noted that the victim is receiving treatment after hours of self torture on the mast.
“He is currently receiving treatment at the Psychiatry department of State Specialist Hospital Gombe,” Malum said.
