North East DSS meets in Gombe, plans to tackle insecurity
The Gombe state Deputy Governor, Manassah Jatau, has declared open, a two-day conference of State Directors of State Security Service of the North East sub- region geared towards tackling security challenges in the zone.
Declaring the conference open in Gombe, Deputy Governor challenged the State Directors of the State Security Service to proffer solutions that would tackle security challenges confronting the North East and the country in different forms, methods and trends.
Jatau called on the top notches of the state security service in the North East to take advantage of the recent technological innovations to tackle the challenges introduced and compounded by the same technological advancement.
The Deputy Governor noted that the conference of the state Directors of the North East is coming at the right time when the zone is faced by increased security problems and a time when the Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya is fighting with all determination and dedication to ensure safety of lives and properties of people in the state.
He highlighted that, the position of the state in the centre of the North East,and peaceful coexistence makes it a hub and epicentre of activities, that attracted all sorts of persons,including Internally Displaced Persons, causing population explosion, and making it prune to all criminal activities.
He said, “As Masters, Veterans, and Professionals in the art of security, be it social, or physical, you know the obvious implications of the few features highlighted above as you struggle to carry out your roles in your society and other states with such environment. Both good and bad people are attracted to the state. Therein lies the dilemma and a thorny issue as you perform your functions.”
The Deputy Governor said the government considers everybody important in the desire to have peace and ensure that security is maximally attained, adding that it was in accordance with this that the government incorporated traditional rulers, religious and community leaders, scholars, hunters vigilantes, youths and other voluntary bodies or groups to complement the efforts of the security agencies.
He said, they have been partnering with all security agencies in the state to ensure safety of lives and properties, calling for a synergy and understanding between them towards achieving the desired goal of sustainable peace and security.
In his remarks, Chairman of the Conference, Babagana Bulama, the Adamawa State Director, State Security Service said the conference is in sequence of zonal quarterly conferences initiated by the service to bring together State Directors within the country’s various geopolitical zones with a view to brain storming on the general security situation of their respective zones.
He said, “The initiative is anchored on the belief that, states within the subregion are faced with common and similar security challenges, most of which cuts across state boundaries with peculiar manifestations in individual states in some occasions.”
The Chairman expressed hope that the conference would come up with resolutions that would help proffer further guides and causes of action to service commands and other relevant stakeholders in the sub region with a view to strengthening existence, counter measures and sustaining a holistic approach in tackling the numerous security troubles bedevilling the zone and the country.
He listed the general issues of regional security and development import affecting the zone to include farmers herders clash, Environmental disasters, influx of strange elements from worse hit states, transborder smuggling, among others.
Also speaking, The State Director, State Security Service, Alh. Abba Abdullahi, said the conference was necessitated by the insecurity in the country, particularly terrorism, banditry, kidnap for Ransome and other criminal activities affecting the peaceful coexistence of the people.
He noted that the common borders Gombe state has, with other states in the North East, makes Gombe to be threatened by security issues affecting other states in the zone.
He appreciated the Governor, and his Deputy for being supportive to the service and other security Agencies towards peaceful coexistence and overall socioeconomic development.
