Gombe gov converts Dankwambo’s N2b Nursing college to varsity extension
Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, has said the yet to be completed College of Nursing and Midwifery, Dukku, would be converted to a campus for Gombe state University (GSU), Dukku.
He made this disclosure on Thursday, while touring projects in Dukku with some officials of North East Development Commission.
According to Yahaya, the over N2.4 billion project started in 2013, is at 80 percent completion stage and would not be ready with the original intention of the previous administration.
Recall that the project was instituted by former governor Ibrahim Dankwambo, to accommodate the current College of Nursing and Midwifery, presently domiciled in Gombe metropolis. Earlier, Yahaya, had hinted that the state-owned college of nursing would be relocated to Akko local government area.
Yahaya said, “We will not abandon this project because of the resources already spent on it, so, we will complete it in no distant time and use it a learning centre of the GSU.
“We don’t have any hospital that can be converted to a specialist hospital in the whole of Gombe state now, we had to recruit about 6 more consultants and spend over N800 million to upgrade the so called specialist hospital in Gombe metropolis to a real specialist hospital.”
While explaining the reason for the change in the original plan, the governor noted that prior to now the structure was dilapidated after years of abandonment, “knowing full well that for a college of nursing to exist there must be a specialist hospital that has consultants and doctors that will be able to train the nurses and Midwife. We decide to carry this into another use and make it a campus of the Gombe State University. It will be used to service not only nursing but any other course that the university can run concurrently. By so doing we utilize the place, we upgrade and improve the quality of our education,” Yahaya said.
