NEDC to support takeoff of Police tactical units in Gombe
North East Development Commission (NEDC), has indicated interest to ensure the smooth take of police tactical training school in Dukku local government area.
The training school is expected to train officers of the police force on Counter Terrorism Units (CTU), Special Protection units (SPU), and Border Control within the region.
Speaking separately on Thursday, during a tour facilitated by the governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, board Chairman of the Commission Maj. Gen. Paul Tarfa (retd.) and the Managing Director of Mohammed Alkali said the commission would rely on relevant documents to situate the expected support.
Recall that the training centre which was built by Central Bank of Nigeria was handed over by Governor Yahaya since October 2020, but had delay in the commencement of activities due to infrastructure deficit.
“The mandate of the commission is to improve security, wherever it exists. We have seen it and there is a lot to be done no doubt about that, when we get back. We will put our heads together to see what we can do as we have done in other places.
“We will get all the details and sit with his excellency’s team. So that we can see what we can do immediately in the mid term, and long run. So that this place will be functional not only to Gombe state but to the whole region and by extension the whole country,” NEDC officials said.
On his part, Governor Yahaya said the school would contribute to the safety of lives and property in the region.
He explained that since the school was constructed by CBN, it had not been put to use, adding that insecurity was the cause of abandoning the project.
Yahaya said, “Just close by is the government science secondary school but was forced to close because of the threats of insurgents. Even now we are still living with those threats around us.
“As a result Nigeria Police force accepted to use this as a base for the training of CTU, border patrol and SPU. It is most a year after the takeover and since NEDC which is out to service security and humanitarian issues, so the need to see this place for NEDC to intervene.”
Also speaking, Commandant of the tactical training school Yahaya Usman, noted the deficit in infrastructure as cause for the commencement of the units.
He added that the facility would get better with the support of NEDC, stressing that the area is bedeviled with security challenges.
