Yuletide: Ban on fireworks subsists – Police tells Gombe residents
Gombe State Commissioner of Police Ishola Babaita says the ban on the sale, purchase and use of fireworks still subsists.
He noted that there is a tiny difference between the sounds from explosives to that from guns, adding that it also contributes to undue panic for innocent residents.
Disclosing this through a press statement signed on Tuesday, by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command Mary Obed, the commissioner called on residents to abide by the order.
Fireworks also referred to as ‘Knockout, Banga’ serves a climax of the Christmas and new year celebrations, due to the fond memories it yields about the season.
According to him, the command would not fold it hand and watch people cause unnecessary disturbances in the state, in an attempt to merry.
Babaita said, “The enforcement of the ban on the use of fireworks and other explosives is to prevent hoodlums using them as a cover to create panic, perfect their criminal intentions and disrupt peaceful celebration of the festive seasons.”
While assuring of peaceful festive experience in Gombe, Babaita stressed that he has ordered Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, Heads of tactical and operational units, “To deploy all the intelligence and operational assets at their disposal to criminals flashpoints, highways, streets and other public places for patrol with a view to ensuring a hitch-free celebrations,” Babaita added.
Commenting on corrupt tendencies during the yuletide, the boss commissioner advised them to eschew sharp practices capable of diminishing their efforts all through the year.
He said, “They are to ensure that police operatives under their watch discharge their duties in accordance with the extant laws and rule of engagement of the Nigeria Police Force especially by shunning corruption, extortion and respecting the fundamental human rights of citizens.”
Meanwhile, Babaita also cautioned motorists to abide by traffic regulations and avoid over speeding and reckless driving during the festive period so as not to endanger the lives of the people.
He added that residents of the state should remain supportive by being vigilant, law abiding and promptly reporting criminals and their activities to nearest police station or any security agency.
