Gombe Water Commissioner inaugurates SURWASH steering committee
The Honourable Commissioner Ministry of Water Resources Gombe state, Hon. Mijinyawa Yahaya, on Tuesday inaugurated Sustainable Urban Rural Water Sanitation and Hygiene (SURWASH), state steering committee.

Periscope Nigeria reports that it is part of the implementation structure of the SURWASH programme at the state level.
The SURWASH programme is expected to build the momentum of the National action plan for the revitalisation of Nigeria’s water sanitation and hygiene ( wash sector), which was launched by Mr President along side the declaration of state of emergency on the wash sector on 8th November 2018.
States were asked to express interest to participate in the programme and also to commit to a set of eligibility criteria and Gombe state is among the seven states that qualified alongside Delta, Ekiti, Imo, Katsina, Kaduna and Plateau states.
The overall programme objective is to increase access to water supply, sanitation and hygiene services in Urban, small towns and institutions in participating states.
Preparations for the implementation of the programme in Gombe state has reached an appreciable level because the machinery required for the smooth take off of the programme has been put in place and appointment of key officers to manage the programme has been made by His Excellency Alhaji Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya the executive Governor of Gombe State and approved by the World Bank.
Hence, the constitution of the state steering committee at the state level which is saddled with the following responsibilities:
- Overall state level Coordination of the program implementation activities
- Policy Guidance
- Approval of Annual workplan and Budget of the program prepared by the state project implementation unit (SPIU).
- Monitoring and Evaluation of the performance of the SPIU and the overall program results
To meet annually to review the overall performance of the preceding year and plan for the following year.
The composition of the state steering committee as guided by the world Bank is as follows:
- Honourable Commissioner ministry of Water Resources as Chairman
- Hon. Commissioner of Finance as Member
- Hon. Commissioner Min. Of Health as member
- Hon Commissioner Environment as member
- Hon Commissioner Education as member
- Hon. Commissioner women affairs as member
- Hon Commissioner local Govt and chieftaincy affairs as member
- Special Adviser Budget planning and Debt partners as member
- GM water Board as member
- GM Ruwassa as Member
- GM Gosepa as member
- PC SURWASH to serve as member and secretary of the steering committee.
Yahaya who congratulated members of the SURWASH, wished them a successful tenure. This paved way for the presentation of work plan by the SPIU team.
