USAID trains 30 Adamawa officials in management, leadership skills
United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has begun a three-day training for 30 commissioners and other top Adamawa government officials on leadership and management skills to promote good governance at the grassroots.
The programme is being implemented through the USAID’s funded Accountability, Transparency and Effectiveness (State2State) Activity.
The project is designed to promote good public service delivery and good governance at the state and local government levels.
Mr John Onyeukwu, the Acting Chief Party, USAID, said this at the inauguration of the exercise on Wednesday in Gombe.
He said the participants comprised officials from the Ministries of Education, Health and Water Resources.
Represented by Mohammed Abubakar, State Team Lead, State2State project in Gombe State, Onyeukwu said the exercise would prepare the participants for higher responsibilities and equip them with the right development skills to function effectively.
“Part of the goal of the training is to ensure effective and efficient leadership and implementation of new skills towards promoting good governance in Adamawa,” he said.
According to him, good governance involves blocking leakages for corruption and working efficiently by utilising the little available resources to maximise impact.
The participants, he said, at the end of the exercise were expected to develop action plan for implementation in their various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
Mr Ndukwe Robert, the Acting State Lead, State2state project in Adamawa, said the exercise would expose the participants to new skills to enhance quality service delivery.
“We want this change to appear in education, primary healthcare and WASH,” he said, adding that it would ensure that technocrats from the state were well-informed in alignment to the objectives of government for the overall benefit of the people.
Also speaking, Dr Ishaya Dabari, the state Commissioner for Finance and Budget, said the training would impact positively towards promoting good governance in the state.
He said that the capacity-building and enhancement of performance would help bridge leadership gaps, encouraged improved performance and productivity.
Dabari commended the gesture, adding that it would enhance transparency, accountability and inclusiveness in governance.
On his part, Mr Harry Udo, the Technical Consultant for USAID State2State project said the training was timely in view of the need to bridge the gaps discovered during organisational capacity assessment carried out.
“If governments are going to deliver on the dividends of democracy, if we are going to have good governance, then this is the way to go and that is why we are here.”
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 30 participants including commissioners, permanent secretaries and directors attended the exercise.
Highlights of the training exercise include group works, technical and interactive sessions geared towards ensuring participants understood the different presentations made.(NAN)
