CIHP donates machine for treatment of early cervical Cancer to FTH Gombe
The Centre for Integrated Health Services CIHP has donated Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP) machine worth 5.8 million naira to the Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe for the treatment of cervical cancer patients.

Presenting the machine, the state Project Director CIHP Mrs Emily Kenor Madina said the centre had earlier donated a testing machine and observed the hospital needed a treatment machine following increasing number of clients diagnosed withe cervical cancer.
Madina said, “this is our own way of contributing our quota to particularly women in Gombe and Nigeria so that some of these diseases that are silent killers of women would be identified early and be treated to reduce some hardship faced and for them to live longer.
“We started by supporting the specialist hospital with the equipment being a state hospital with high number of clients. We are at the apex Hospital to donate same for improved service delivery.”
She said CIHP is supporting HIV response in the state, adding that currently there are thirty one thousand people living with HIV.
She said one of the things observed at the cause of offering services to PLHIV is an increasing number of women with cervical cancer.
“That prompted us to take a step to look for more funds from our funders to get a biger version of the machine that would also treat clients after screening,” Madina added.
On his part, Chief Medical Director of the Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe Dr. Yusuf Abdullahi appreciated the donation, saying it is an important machine for treatment of early cervical Cancer.
Dr Yusuf said, “I do not know how to quantify the usage of this machine because of it importance to the treatment of cervical cancer which is one of the commonest cancer in women.”
He said the treatment and management of the malignant disease can be difficult, hence the machine would help in treatment at early stage.
The CMD revealed that the treatment would be highly subsidised for people to afford it.
“CIHP donated it so we are going to give a human face to the usage so that cost of service will reduce drastically for many to have access,” he added.
Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP) uses a wire loop heated by electric current to remove cells and tissue in a woman’s lower genital tract. It is used as part of the diagnosis and treatment for abnormal or cancerous conditions.
