Group condemns killing of Deborah, says act babaric, brutal
A faith-based organisation has condemned the killing of Deborah Samuel, describing it as babaric and brutal.
Samuel was a 200-level student at Shehu Shagari College of Education Sokoto was killed by those alleged to be Islamic extremists on campus.
Arising from an emergency meeting on Saturday, Rev. Jim Amos, the National Leadership of TEKAN/ECWA Youth and YOWICAN condemned the act, adding that it was unwarranted.
Amos who addressed journalists after the meeting called for the arrest of the perpetrators, while urging security agents to carry out investigation towards forestalling it reoccurrence.
Amos said, “The National Leadership of TEKAN/ECWA Youth and YOWICAN condemns in the strongest terms this unwarranted jungle justice meted out to her by taking the laws into their hands. In this regard, we commend all organisations and individuals (both Christians and Muslims) for coming out to condemn the acts and calling on the government to bring the perpetrators to book. We call on both the Federal and Sokoto State government to rise up to the occasion as the world is watching.
“We are aware that many organisations have called for the arrest and prosecution of the culprits, we make bold to say that the National and State Assemblies must as a matter of urgency enact a law that will handle such issues going forward.”
While warning those that are aggrieved to cease an act capable of causing reprisal in the country, said the task of revenge was of God.
“At this moment of grief when our sister is being buried as we speak, we wish to commiserate with the Church in Nigeria, TEKAN/ECWA Bloc, CAN in Sokoto and Kebbi States, the Zuru people and the immediate and extended family of Late Deborah Samuel Yakubu. We pray God to comfort the family and the Christian Community at large.
“As law abiding citizens, we call on all Christian Youth to remain calm, law abiding and desist from taking laws into their hands, let us leave everything in the hands of God Almighty who is the final judge.
“We call on government at all levels and all religious bodies to advice their leaders (Pastors and Imams) to be mindful of their utterances so as not to incite their members,” the National leader added.
