SOKOTO BLASPHEMY:
Gombe Police Meet Christian, Muslim Clerics
Following tension in Sokoto State over the killing of a student of Shehu Shagari College of Education for blasphemy, the Gombe State Police command has held an emergency meeting with Islamic and Christian clerics to strengthen peace.
The meeting which took place on Monday at the police headquarters had representatives of Muslim and Christian communities in Gombe State.
The state Commissioner of Police said the meeting was to strengthen understanding and sustain peace between the two main faiths.
The commissioner also commended the efforts of Islamic and Christian clerics in preaching peace to their subjects and urged them to collaborate with the police to maintain law and order.
The representatives of Jama’atul Nasrul Islam, JNI and the Christian Association of Nigeria CAN vowed to maintain peace among their followers.
Alhaji Sale Danburam the Secretary Jama’atu Nasril Islam also stated that peace is the backbone of every religion, “because we can not perform prayers amid crisis, ” Danburam said.
He lauded the commissioner of police for his efforts at securing Gombe State to be one of the safest state in the Country.
Also speaking, Chairman of CAN Rev. Father Joseph Shinga, called on teeming youths and followers of Christianity in the state to maintain peace.
Shinga said, “Peace is an issue of national interest which can not be over emphasized.”
While promising the Commissioner of Police that the relative peace would be maintained.
Periscope Nigeria reports that Gombe is believed to be one of the most peaceful states in the country.
At the end of the Stakeholders’ engagement participants harped how important it was for them to work towards maintaining the status quo, as commissioner of police reassured the citizens of his commitment to securing lives and property.
