Two injured as police, Kalare clash in Gombe
The Gombe State Police Command on Saturday quelled the activities of a thug group identified as Kalare, where two persons sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Reiterating the commitment to protection of lives and property of the citizens, Public Relations Officer of the command ASP Mahid Abubakar, said the group members were about 50 wielding dangerous weapons in the metropolis.
Abubakar disclosed that the two persons including a passer-by was caught in the crossfire, after attempt by the tactical team with minimal force failed, adding that the police swung into action following distress call by residents.
He said, “the Command tactical teams “coded” 999 responded to a distress call by a good samaritan that a gang of thugs (Kalare boys ) numbering about 50 from Abacha road and Bala mai kwalta street Jekadafari quarters Gombe, armed themselves with a machete, daggers, sticks and other dangerous weapons blocked the roads linking to central roundabout terrorising members of the public.
“On receipt of the distress call, the teams responded immediately, moved to the scene of crime and made effort to disperse the hooligans with the use of minimal force,but declined by the gang which resorted to attacks on the team which prompted the use of additional force on them.
“As a result, one of the thugs ( kalare boys ) and a woman who was a passerby sustained injuries and are presently responding to treatment at Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe.”
While urging criminal elements against utilising the electioneering season to launch harm on innocent residents, Abubakar reassured Gombe people of the command’s effort in steming crimes.
“However, the Command wishes to warn all criminally minded individuals or groups against all forms of hooliganism and thuggery before during and after the electioneering activities in the state and any erring individual or groups will be dealt with accordingly.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Ishola Babatunde Babaita, reassures the citizens of Gombe State to go about their lawful businesses without any fear of threat or molestation of any kind as the command is on top of the situation to ensure that where ever the miscreants are hiding will be flushed out, arrested and arraigned before the Court of competent jurisdiction,” Abubakar added.
