Gombe Gets Female Acting Chief Judge
Following the retirement of Chief Judge of Gombe State, Joseph Awak, Halima Mohammed, has emerged as Acting Chief Judge of the State.
Recall that on the 31st March 2022, Awak was confirmed after serving for three months in acting capacity.
Presiding over the ceremony, Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, stated that his administration has opted out for digitisation of judicial system in the state, urging Mohammed, to consolidate government’s efforts.
He said, “Over the past three years, our administration has introduced far reaching reforms across many areas of governance. These reforms have earned us national and international commendations in areas of land administration, ease of doing business, civil service reforms and human capital development. In order for the judiciary to adequately play its role, we need to train and equip our judicial officers with the requisite knowledge, tools and insights to meet the needs of a 21st century judicial system, in line with international best practices.”
Assuring of government’s support to ensuring the independence of the judiciary, Yahaya called on the Acting Chief Judge to discharge her duties without fear and favour.
“While discharging your constitutional duties, I have no doubt you will do so without discrimination, fear or favour.Rededicate yourself to the service of the people so that together we can take the state to enviable heights.
“On our part, I would like to restate our commitment to respecting the independence of the Judiciary according to the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the governor added.
While commending the erstwhile Chief Judge, Yahaya added, “Laudable and selfless service to the state and the nation. His dedication to duty, hard work, legal scholarship, professional competence is worthy of emulation. Even though he is retiring, I am certain that he is not tired, and we shall frequently require his wise counsel. On behalf of the entire people of Gombe State, I once again bid you farewell and wish you success in all your future endeavors.”
On his part, Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibrahim Njodi, said the event was evident to the saying that what a man can do a woman can do better.
He said, “It reaffirms why the governor is an award recipient of heforshe.”
Mohammed was born on the 3rd May 1963, in Tula, Kaltungo Local Government Area of Gombe State.
