BON hails NBC for penalising defaulting stations
The Outgoing Chairman of Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON), zone B, Adamu Abadam, has hailed National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), for penalising defaulting members.
Abadam, who is also the General Manager Borno Radio/Television made this disclosure during a courtesy visit to Gombe Deputy Governor’s office, following it quarterly meeting held in the state.
Our Correspondent reports that BON is an association of executives of public, private, and satellite stations in the country.
Speaking about the recent big stick wielded by NBC on broadcast Organisations, Abadam said, “For violating the NBC code, any station that violates the code NBC has the right to take action. It is not the first time the NBC is taking action against stations. Arise, is a good television station, very vibrant broadcasting Organisation as at today. So, if you are good, do the right thing.”
The outing chairman who disclosed that zone B had unanimously elected Yusuf Isah as it next Chairman, emphasised on the importance of training and funding media houses.
“We are making effort to train our journalists. A trained journalist can not accept any story without balancing it,” he added.
Also speaking, Isah said he knows the system and terrain to triumph in his new position as chairman, calling on media owners to put into consideration the welfare of their personnel.
Isah said, “At this material time that we are heading towards election is the safety of the Journalist. You can only report when you are alive, the issue of training will come up because when you have trained personnel you will get results at the end of the day.”
While commenting on the negative impact of social media to standard news outfits, Isah urged journalists not to rely on social media, advising them to investigate indepthly.
“Social media has come to stay, I will only use the social media to get a tip and as a journalist I will follow up to ensure it balanced and follows professional touches before we go on air with,” he added.
On his part, the Deputy Governor Dr. Manassah Jatau, disclosed that training and funding were imperative in order to rescue media practice from carriers of fake news and hate speech.
Jatau said, “Everyone knows that training is important because of the changing trends, you need to be trained, you need to learn more tactics. Unfortunately, the social that has replaced you is full of mischief, hate speeches, misinformation and therefore you have a great task ahead of you therefore only training will help you adapt to the need environment you have found yourselves.”
