Advert: BON decries impact of indigenous companies patronising foreign stations
Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON), has decried the negative impact of indigenous companies in Nigeria patronising foreign stations with advertisements.
Speaking on Thursday at Gombe Deputy Governor’s office during a courtesy visit Adadu Abadam, Chairman BON Zone B, who doubles as Borno Radio Authority said if such money was invested into the Nigerian media it would record transformation.
According to him, finance, retraining are ingredients of sustaining a vibrant media outfit
He said, “Support to media Organisations is our request. An example is some very big industries like financial sectors; banks instead of them to advertise their services in Gombe Television, Borno Radio or Yobe they will just give the slot to CNN and they are paying one million dollars per slot that is close to N600 million.
“If they can spread this one million dollars monthly nationwide it will go along way in supporting media Organisations. Including communication operators all advertising in foreign stations whereas the consumers are here.”
Abadam, said they were in Gombe State for its zone quarterly, said Yusuf Isah, would take over the baton of leadership from him based on consensus.
He revealed that BON has about 45 stations in the North-East, “We have state owned media stations, private media stations. The Federal organisations include NTA, FRCN, VON. The state own media stations include all stations belonging to state governments and we have cable satellite providers. We have six zones comprising of A,B,C,D, E, F and our own is zone B with all the North-East State,” he said.
On his part, Deputy Governor Manassah Jatau, said the media deserve maximum support and cooperation to triumph.
He disclosed that training and funding were imperative in order to rescue media practice from carriers of fake news and hate speech.
Jatau said, “Everyone knows that training is important because of the changing trends, you need to be trained, you need to learn more tactics. Unfortunately, the social that has replaced you is full of mischief, hate speeches, misinformation and therefore you have a great task ahead of you therefore only training will help you adapt to the need environment you have found yourselves.”
Also speaking, the soon to be inaugurated chairman of the zone, Isah, who is General Manager Yobe State Television said his dispensation would liaise with owners of media houses on the welfare of staff.
“we will encourage Chief Executives to make sure that when people are employed the organisation makes sure they provide necessary logistics including salaries, wages, and emoluments,” Isah said.
