2023: INEC boss restates commitment to credible polls
The Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has expressed optimism to conduct transparent polls in 2023.
Yakubu, made this disclosure during a one-day consultative meeting with Media Executives held in Lagos.
The engagement was organised alongside European Union, DAI to sensitise industry leaders on INEC’s preparedness towards next year’s election.
According to him, “Our loyalty and allegiance is to Nigeria and Nigerians for free, fair and credible elections in 2023.”
While commending the commitment of the young people, the Electoral Chief, noted that the commission required the support of the citizens, “there can not be successful elections in Nigeria without young people.”
Yakubu disclosed that no fewer than 1.4 million Nigerians would be employed as ad hoc staff for the 2023 polls. While bemoaning the attacks currently ravaging INEC offices, the Electoral Umpire called for collaboration.
“Attacks on INEC facilities is a cause for concern.All damaged materials will be replaced. Others have been replaced already.Under age voters, non Nigerians and persons with multiple registrations will be arrested and prosecuted.
“Media should be more proactive in addressing misinformation, disinformation and fake news.There will be more partnership between INEC and media,” he added.
Speaking in a chat with PERISCOPE NIGERIA, George Mathias, Managing Director of Amana FM, who was represented by Head of News and Current Affairs, Bulus Elkanah, commended INEC chairman and “his lieutenants for their courage in facing its challenges head on.”
He expressed optimism to use his medium to promote issue-based campaigns, towards achieving credible and transparent process.
