NYSC Ag. DG Cautions Corps Members Against Cultism, Drug abuse, others
Acting Director-General of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Christy Uba, on Tuesday cautioned 2022 batch C stream II Corps Members about cultism, drug abuse and other related vices.
Uba, who was represented by State Coordinator Ada Imoni, made this disclosure while declaring open camp activities at temporary orientation camp Amada Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State.
Our Correspondent reports that no fewer than 741 Corps Members were administered oath of allegiance by Acting Chief Judge Justice Halima Mohammed, who was represented by Justice Fatima Musa, comprising; 404 males and 337 females.
According to the Acting DG, Corps Members should desist from acts capable of tarnishing the image of NYSC, adding that punitive actions would be taken using relevant bye-laws.
Uba said, “Let me also remind you that the oath of allegiance you have taken today is very important, as it is expected to guide your conduct in the Service Year as well as have a significant influence on your life after service. You are also enjoined to acquaint yourselves with the provisions of the NYSC Act and the NYSC Bye-Laws.
“I implore you to sustain the high level of discipline and enthusiasm you have demonstrated so far, especially by remaining compliant with the Camp rules and regulations. You must continue to distance yourselves from cultism, drug abuse and other social vices.
“I also urge you to avoid using social media for spreading fake news, fuelling hatred and other negative purposes, and instead deploy the same for the promotion of national unity and development. You are strongly advised to be security conscious at all times and to report any suspicious characters or activities around you to the appropriate authorities.”
Commenting on the essence of the Scheme, Uba urged the Corps Members to use the chance provided by their deployment to understand the various cultures in Gombe.
“One of the objectives of NYSC is to promote national unity and integration. Therefore your deployment to States apart from your origin and also your assemblage here from diverse ethnic, religious and socio-economic backgrounds is in pursuant to this noble objective. This will not only offer you the opportunity for a broader understanding of the country, but also entrench the culture of working together in an atmosphere filled with friendship, peace, harmony, and a shared vision of a great and prosperous Nigeria,” Uba said.
While reminding the Corps Members about the importance of self reliance, stressed the need for the 741 of them to take seriously Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme.
Uba added, “At this juncture, I will like to remind you that white-collar jobs are not readily available. Therefore, I encourage you to avail yourselves of the opportunities for self-employment offered through the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) Programme. You are expected to choose from any of the skill areas, and make yourselves available for the training, which starts from the Orientation Camp. On our part, Management will continue to work with relevant stakeholders for the success of the programme.”
