Handle hazardous wastes properly to avoid diseases spread in hospitals – Experts tell health practitioners
The Chief Medical Director of Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe, Dr Yusuf Mohammed Abdullahi, has charged Health practitioners to handle hazardous wastes well to avoid spreading diseases in hospitals.
PERISCOPE NIGERIA reports that Biorisk generally refers to the risk associated with biological materials or infectious agents, also known as pathogens.
Abdullahi represented by Professor Sani Adamu, gave the charge on Wednesday while declaring open a two-day training on Bio Risk Management and Bio Risk Management manual sponsored by Health Security Partners, USA.
The Chief Medical Director said, “proper discipline in handling hazardous wastes by health practitioners will curtail eruption of other diseases in the hospital.”

He expressed optimism that more of such training would continue to unfold, calling on the participants to teach others what they learnt during the training.
In her opening remarks, convener of the training, Gloria Michael a certified Bio Risk Expert, said the training would improve Bio Security in the hospital, “whereby health practitioners will follow safe working guidelines,” she added.
She revealed that after the two-day training, a policy document on Bio Risk management would be drafted to be used in managing hazardous wastes.

Also speaking, the Programme Manager, Health Security Partners, Washington DC, Rebecca Sherrod, represented by Abdulsalam Yakubu, congratulated Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe for securing the keenly contested offer, saying more offers are in the pipeline.
The Heads of various departments in the hospital in their goodwill messages applauded the convener and sponsors of the training.

In their separate remarks called on the participants to ensure they utilised the lessons of the training.
