In recent times, the capital territory of Asaba in Delta State has witnessed a tragic series of incidents resulting from the negligence and poor conduct of construction companies entrusted with the vital task of building drainage systems. The failure to cover manholes by these contractors has led to numerous fatalities and injuries among citizens and visitors alike. This article aims to shed light on the irresponsible actions of these companies, call for their accountability, and urge the Delta State Government and other stakeholders to take immediate action to rectify this grievous situation.

Negligence and Consequences:
The lack of due care demonstrated by the construction companies in failing to cover manholes within the entire capital territory of Asaba is deeply concerning. These contractors were awarded contracts by the Delta State Government, implying a level of trust and responsibility. However, their actions have not only betrayed this trust but have also put countless lives at risk.

The consequences of their negligence have been devastating. Innocent individuals, both familiar and unfamiliar with the drainage terrain, have fallen victim to these open manholes. Tragically, many have lost their lives, and others have suffered severe injuries that may impact their quality of life permanently. Such incidents are entirely preventable and should not be occurring if the contractors had fulfilled their duty of care.

Demand for Accountability:
It is imperative for the Delta State Government to hold these construction companies accountable for their unprofessional and incomplete work. The government must recognize its role in ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens and take appropriate action against those responsible for this widespread negligence.

The contractors, who have been well-compensated for their services, must be made to answer for their actions. By failing to fulfill their obligations, they have not only jeopardised public safety but have also eroded the public’s trust in the government’s ability to select competent and reliable contractors. It is high time for the Delta State Government to send a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated and that accountability is non-negotiable.

Stakeholder Responsibility:
Beyond the government’s role, other state actors and stakeholders must also play a vital part in pursuing these arrogant and unprofessional contractors. Civil society organizations, professional associations, and concerned individuals should unite in their demand for justice and transparency.

These stakeholders possess the power to exert pressure on both the government and the construction companies, highlighting the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for rectification. By collaborating and actively pursuing accountability, they can ensure that those responsible are held liable for their actions.

Steps towards Resolution:
To address this crisis effectively, a multi-faceted approach is necessary:

Thorough Investigation: The Delta State Government should initiate a comprehensive investigation into the conduct of the construction companies. This investigation must be conducted with transparency and independence, ensuring that the truth is uncovered and appropriate actions are taken.

Legal Measures:
If found guilty of negligence, the contractors should face legal consequences to deter future instances of unprofessional conduct. This can include fines, penalties, and even contract termination.

Improved Oversight:
The Delta State Government must strengthen its oversight mechanisms to prevent such instances from occurring again. Robust monitoring, regular inspections, and stringent contractual agreements can ensure that contractors adhere to the highest standards of safety and professionalism._

Public Awareness and Education:
Efforts should be made to raise public awareness regarding the dangers of open manholes and the importance of reporting any uncovered manholes promptly. Citizens and visitors should be educated about safety precautions to minimize the risk of accidents.

Conclusion:

The failure of construction companies in Delta State to cover manholes in the capital territory of Asaba represents a grave violation of their duty of care. The resulting loss of life and injuries are a tragic consequence of their negligence.
