Democracy Day: NYP Speaker lauds leaders, admonishes youth to champion the future of the Nation

The Speaker, Nigerian Youth Parliament Dr Azeezat Yishawu, on Monday lauded the passion and patriotism of past and present leaders of the country, for their roles in the sustenance of Democracy.

Yishawu made this commendation in a press statement made available to PERISCOPE NIGERIA, lauding the resilience which was entrenched by Democracy.

She said, “Today, on the occasion of Nigeria’s June 12 Democracy Day, the Nigerian Youth Parliament extends warm congratulations to the newly ushered-in administration of the 16th Democratically elected President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We take this opportunity to celebrate the resilience and spirit of democracy that has shaped our nation’s history and to reflect on the sacrifices made by our founding fathers.”

While enumerating the efforts of Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, she condemned the cancellation of the process that produced him, noting that it should be constant reminder on the need to ensure rule of law.

“As we honour this significant day, we call upon the youth of our nation to rise and embrace the full responsibility for the future of our great country, just as our founding fathers did at a young age. We must recognise the power and potential within us to shape the destiny of Nigeria.

“The pages of history remind us of the unjust cancellation of the landmark election of Chief M.K.O. Abiola by the late General Sani Abacha. This act of injustice serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of upholding the rule of law and safeguarding our democracy. It underscores the need for our youth to actively engage in the democratic process and protect the values that our forefathers fought tirelessly for,” Yishawu added.

The trained Medical Doctor, while encouraging youth participation in politics, urged them to draw inspiration from MKO, stressing that the NYP commits to fostering of unity and peace.

The Speaker said, “The Nigerian Youth Parliament firmly believes in the potential of our youth to effect positive change in our society. This is the time to listen to the voices of the youth, who represent the vibrant and dynamic future of Nigeria.

“Let us draw inspiration from the indomitable spirit of Chief M.K.O. Abiola and the countless heroes and heroines who sacrificed their lives for the cause of democracy. Their courage and determination continue to resonate within us, urging us to work tirelessly toward building a prosperous, inclusive, and equitable Nigeria for all.

“On this historic occasion, the Nigerian Youth Parliament reaffirms its commitment to fostering unity, peace, and progress in our beloved nation. We call upon all Nigerian youths to actively participate in nation-building, promote social cohesion, and contribute their unique talents and ideas to shape a brighter future.

“Together, let us stand united as advocates of democracy and guardians of the values that define our nation. May our actions today pave the way for a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria tomorrow.”
