Mr Cletus Gwotyel, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Natural Resources Development, said this at the commemoration of 2023 World Environment Day in Yola with theme “Solutions to Plastic Pollution.”

The ceremony was organised by the Environmental Care Foundation, Adamawa, in collaboration with the Federal and State Ministries of Environment and the Waste to Wealth Recyclers Association.

Gwotyel said that plastic pollution had become a global environment issue that needed to be addressed by all.

“The ministry is encouraging and supporting many Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to establish plastic waste recycling outfits in the state.

“Notably among them is the Yola Renewal Foundation that has invested in the business and will soon flag off a recycling plant, in conjunction with Tearfund Nigeria,” he said.

He said that the ministry in conjunction with the State Field Office of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) and the Federal Ministry of Environment would continue to monitor the activities of producers, handlers and recyclers of plastic wastes in the state.

Gwotyel said the move would proffer mitigation measures in line with extant environmental regulations.

In his remarks, Mr Yohanna Moses, Executive Director, Environmental Care Foundation, Adamawa expressed the need for all stakeholders to scale up and speedy actions to solve the menace of plastic pollution.

He assured of the foundation’s readiness to continue to sensitise the public to save the environment for better leaving.

He said that over 50,000 seedlings were donated to the foundation following sensitisation.

Moses said some of the seedlings would be distributed to the citizens free of charge for planting in their homes, gardens and schools among others places to green Adamawa.
