Measurement of Insecurity
By Comrade Musa Ali Maishanu
A brief highlight of my independent work on “measurement of insecurity” was shared by me last month via my Social Media Platforms without details about it or summary of the work. Below are brief highlight of the work.
The stated above work has concepts. Because the work can help the criminological and securitical researchers in measuring of insecurity while conducting their researches on insecurity and reinsecurity in any country or state. However, The criminological and securitical researchers that hopes to measure insecurity in any country or state can use the following concepts:
a. Incidence source.
b. Prevalence source.
c. Official source.
d. non~official source.
e. victim’s source.
f. survivor’s statement.
a. Incidence source: The accurate number of new cases of a specific form of insecurity occurring within a given country, state, Local government area, and continent during a stated period (e.g., terrorism in America, insurgency and terrorism in some states of Nigeria).
b. Prevalence source: The total accurate number of cases of a specific type of insecurity that exists at a given time in any country or state (e.g.,The prevalence of insecurities in Borno State).
b. Official source: The unbiased data released by authorised institutions either public or private on a specific kind of insecurity happening in a country or state during a stated period.
d. Non~official source: A verified information given by members of a given community on current cases of a specific category of insecurity stabbing their communities within a stated period.
e. Victim’s source: A personalised statement of present and past cases of a specific victimisation of the victim or victims over insecurity occurring within a given state or country during a stated period of time.
f. Survivor’s statement: It has to do with the genuine information given by the victim or victims that survives the victimisation of a specific cases of insecurity in any country or state during a stated period of time.
In view of the above. Therefore, it is important to note that when insecurity incidence figures are presented as rates or as the number of reports per 1 person or more than one person or property, it could be or they are called “Morsecuritidity rates”.While, when they are reported as rates or as the number of reports per zero victim or victims or property, they are called Norsecuritidity rates”.
Moreover, the stated above sources were used by me to exempt Jigawa state from the list of states in the Northern part of Nigeria that insecurity occurred within a given period of time. Therefore, every researcher that wishes to find out about the rate of insecurity in any country or state or distinction between countries, states, local government areas and continents in terms of insecurity can commonly use the stated above concepts.
