The Society of Young Nigerian Writers has joined the literary community in commemorating the 65th anniversary of the timeless classic, “Things Fall Apart,” written by the Late Professor Chinua Achebe.

This was contained in a statement issued by the President of SYNW, Wole Adedoyin in Osogbo on Sunday.

According to the release, “As we honor this iconic novel, which has captivated readers worldwide, we reflect on its enduring legacy and its profound impact on literature and culture.”

Published on June 17, 1958, “Things Fall Apart” is widely regarded as one of the most influential African novels of all time. Its powerful narrative explores the complexities of pre-colonial Nigeria, delving into themes of tradition, colonialism, and the clash of cultures.

“The novel has not only shaped the landscape of African literature but has also become a significant cornerstone in the global literary canon.

“Professor Chinua Achebe’s remarkable storytelling and vivid portrayal of characters have left an indelible mark on readers for over six decades. “Things Fall Apart” continues to be celebrated for its rich cultural representation, lyrical prose, and thought-provoking themes. It has become a symbol of African resilience, challenging misconceptions and shedding light on the diverse narratives of the continent.

“SYNW recognises the profound influence of “Things Fall Apart” on generations of writers, scholars, and readers. The novel has inspired numerous authors to explore their own cultural heritage, encouraging a deeper understanding of African literature and promoting diverse voices in the literary world.

“On this momentous occasion, SYNW encourages readers, both old and new, to revisit “Things Fall Apart” and experience its timeless brilliance. Through this celebration, we aim to highlight the enduring relevance of Achebe’s work, emphasizing the importance of preserving and cherishing our literary heritage.

“As an organisation dedicated to promoting and supporting young Nigerian writers, SYNW acknowledges the role of “Things Fall Apart” in inspiring countless aspiring authors. We strive to continue fostering a literary environment that honors Achebe’s legacy, encouraging the exploration of diverse narratives and the amplification of marginalized voices,” the statement added.

In commemorating the 65th anniversary of “Things Fall Apart,” SYNW called upon educational institutions, libraries, literary societies, and individuals to organise reading sessions, panel discussions, and other activities that promote a deeper engagement with this literary masterpiece.

Adedoyin’s statement added, “By doing so, we can further appreciate the invaluable contribution of “Things Fall Apart” to the literary and cultural heritage of Nigeria and the world.

“SYNW expresses its heartfelt gratitude to the late Professor Chinua Achebe for gifting us with this literary treasure. We extend our appreciation to readers, scholars, and supporters who have helped keep the legacy of “Things Fall Apart” alive for the past 65 years.”
