SYNW congratulates Henry Akubuiro
The Society of Young Nigerian Writers has extended her warm congratulations to Henry Akubuiro, a distinguished Nigerian literary journalist, novelist, and short story writer, on the occasion of his birthday.
This was in a statement issued by SYNW’s President, Wole Adedoyin, on behalf of the entire organisation, adding that it’s a testament to Akubuiro’s exceptional contributions to the literary landscape of Nigeria and beyond.
Henry Akubuiro’s journey in the literary world began during his time as an undergraduate at Imo State University, Owerri, where he served as the pioneer editor of The Elite, the university’s student newspaper, and The Imo Star, the newspaper of the Student Union Government. His passion for journalism and writing quickly garnered recognition, as evidenced by his victory in the prestigious 1998 BBC World Service Young Reporters’ Competition and the National Essay Competition organized by the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports.
In 2005, Akubuiro’s remarkable talent was acknowledged with the ANA Literary Journalist of the Year award. Furthermore, his unpublished work, “Little Wizard of Okokomaiko,” was honored with the 2009 ANA/Lantern Prize for Fiction, further solidifying his reputation as a gifted storyteller. Notably, his novel “Prodigals in Paradise,” published in 2016, was shortlisted for the esteemed 2016 ANA Prose Prize, further affirming his prowess in the literary realm.
Akubuiro’s contributions to the literary world have been invaluable, and his dedication to his craft is commendable. Through his insightful journalism, captivating novels, and engaging short stories, he has played a vital role in promoting the richness and diversity of Nigerian literature. His works have touched the hearts and minds of readers, both young and old, inspiring a new generation of writers to pursue their literary ambitions.
