The Society of Young Nigerian Writers has expressed its motives for celebrating the posthumous birthdays of departed Nigerian writers, adding that its explanation aims to provide insight into SYNW’s rationale and the significance of commemorating these literary icons.

In a statement by SYNW President, Wole Adedoyin, on Saturday SYNW said its recognises the profound impact of departed Nigerian writers on the literary landscape, both nationally and internationally.

“Through the celebration of their posthumous birthdays, SYNW aims to honour and preserve their rich literary legacies. This endeavor ensures that their contributions to Nigerian literature are not forgotten, but rather celebrated and remembered for generations to come.

“Furthermore, the lives and works of departed Nigerian writers serve as a source of inspiration for aspiring writers. By commemorating their birthdays, SYNW seeks to ignite a passion for literature in young minds and encourage them to follow in the footsteps of these esteemed writers.

“Additionally, the celebration of posthumous birthdays underscores the importance of promoting and preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage through literature. Nigerian writers have played a pivotal role in showcasing the nation’s diverse cultural tapestry, and SYNW’s commemoration emphasizes this significance.

“SYNW’s celebration is also a gesture of recognition and appreciation for the remarkable literary achievements of these departed Nigerian writers. Their indelible mark on the literary landscape warrants acknowledgment and serves as a testament to their enduring influence.

“Moreover, SYNW’s commemoration fosters a sense of unity and camaraderie among the literary community, bringing together writers, scholars, and enthusiasts. It serves as an occasion for shared stories, exchanged ideas, and strengthened literary bonds,” the statement partly read.

The SYNW noted that the celebration of posthumous birthdays serves as a catalyst for research and scholarly activities focused on the lives and works of these departed Nigerian writers.

The statement added, “SYNW endeavors to stimulate academic discourse and encourage further exploration of their literary contributions.

“By celebrating their posthumous birthdays, SYNW amplifies the voices of departed Nigerian writers, ensuring that their messages continue to resonate and inspire action. Their works often tackled important social and political issues, making their voices all the more relevant and impactful.

“Furthermore, SYNW’s celebration invites the general public to engage with Nigerian literature and the works of these departed writers. Through various events, readings, and discussions, SYNW aims to promote a wider appreciation for Nigerian literary heritage and cultivate a love for reading among the masses.

“SYNW’s commemoration also pays homage to departed Nigerian writers as national icons, acknowledging their overall impact on Nigerian society and their lasting influence on various aspects of our cultural and intellectual lives.

“Lastly, the celebration of posthumous birthdays reminds us that the literary journey is an ongoing one. SYNW encourages writers to carry forward the legacy of these departed icons and create new literary works that contribute to the vibrant literary landscape of Nigeria.

“In conclusion, SYNW’s celebration of the posthumous birthdays of departed Nigerian writers reflects its commitment to honoring and preserving their invaluable contributions.
