Uncommon Politician: Godswill Akpabio emerges President of 10th Senate
The Nigerian Senate has elected its President after the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Senator Godswill Akpabio, was elected the Senate President defeating his rival Senator Abdullaziz Yari.
Akpabio, known for the name uncommon, was former Akwa Ibom State Governor and erstwhile Minister of Niger-Delta where he agreed that he didn’t fair well.
He garnered 63 votes, while his opponent scored 46 votes to clinch the position.
According to the results announced by the Clerk of the Senate, two contestants, Orji Uzor Kalu and Osita Izunaso had earlier dropped out of the race before the election.
Also, Senator Barau Jibrin has been elected the Deputy Senate President .
He polled 109 votes. All the senators voted for him.
With this the All Progressives Congress has successfully maintained leadership of the red chamber.
