…as Accountants lauded Yahaya’s prudent management of resources, inclusive governance.

The Deputy Governor of Gombe State, Manassah Daniel Jatau, has tasked professional Accountants in the country on imbibing ethics in the course of their duties for efficiency, probity and accountability.

The Deputy Governor gave the indication when addressing the Accountants during their Mandatory Continuing Professional Development Programme at Multipurpose Hall, Federal College of Education ( Technical ) Ashaka Road, Gombe.

Jatau who represented, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, at the occasion, said the Accountants need the mandatory Continuing Professional Development Programmes to broaden their knowledge towards overcoming the numerous bottlenecks associated with the turbulence in society.

He said, “Events and happenings in the LGAs, states, the nation and indeed the world which manifest instability, unpredictability, falling standard of living, misuse of ICT, outright corruption, complex challenges, etc. are too obvious to escape the attention of a crucial professional body like yours. So much are the challenges to cope with, that we need mandatory continuing professional development programmes for overcoming the numerous bottlenecks associated with the turbulence in society.

” Furthermore, globalisation, commercialisation, membership of international organizations and other activities that brings us in constant contact with the outside world, only Accounting beyond Nigerian borders can make you relevant, responsible and proactive, which are the features of effective modern organisations.

“In the face of the numerous emerging challenges, ANAN has no option than to adapt as Charles Darwins (1809-1882) observed is the only condition for the survival of living things, organizations inclusive. Implied is that the accounting profession must adapt to the new realities and embrace the opportunities presented by digital transformation and emerging technology. As you go into the technical session, I urge you to discuss critically, truthfully and respond to any feedback accordingly. Criminologists assert that “somewhere somehow lies the solution to every problem”. Please identify these solutions that will emerge from this programme for the effectiveness of all our organisations be they public or private.
As a government, we commend and thank the leadership of ANAN for the choice of Gombe State out of the 36 plus FCT, to host this year’s MCPD Programme. Be assured of partnership, support and encouragement in your desire to improve Accounting profession and procedures in the world.”

He further explained that, the state has since the inception of the present administration under the leadership of Governor Yahaya who is a professional Accountant has been concerned with transparency, Accountability, zero tolerance to corruption, and prudent use of resources with the sole aim of ensuring that residents get all basic need.

“To God be the glory and gratitude for granting us the privilege and favour to be participants and witnesses at this event organized by the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), a very crucial body created and recreated to inculcate standards of integrity, probity, honesty and good conscience.
In good time let me welcome you all to this event in Gombe State, the Jewel in the Savannah, the home of peace and hospitality, and to extend the greetings, goodwill and well wishes of His Excellency, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, the Governor, and indeed the government and residents of the state.

“My dear ANAN members, other accountants and other respected members of the audience may wish to know that since the coming of this administration on the 29th May, 2019 the Governor has been concerned with transparency, accountability, zero tolerance to corruption and prudent use of its meagre resources with the sole aim of ensuring that the residents get all the basic needs and infrastructure so as to improve the standard of living of the residents. Being an Accountant, the Governor manifested a great political will; subsequently the state achieved a lot in the areas of security, health, education, agriculture, healthy budget implementation, commerce, industrialisation, etc. For want of time since you gave me only ten minutes to talk, the 3 year score card, 2019 – 2022, of this administration highlighted what has been attained so far, while the 10 Year Development Plan (2021 – 2030) pinpoints where and what this state envisage to attain and how in the year 2030. These two documents will be made available to you, if you do not have them already.
Based on the determination of Gombe State contained in the documents mentioned, I find the decision of ANAN to have Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD) Programme as its mandate and also the Theme of the 3rd Session of 2023 which is “Accounting Beyond Nigerian Borders” as apt, germane, necessary and indeed inevitable for Gombe State that is already on the route to attain good governance, in line with global best practices, which you all know is associated with the development and not mere growth of a nation,” he added.

In his address, the President and Chairman of Council of the Association, Dr. James Ekerare Neminebor, welcomed all dignitaries and participants to the third session of the 2023 MCDP Programme.

He said, ” the training theme for this MCPD is ” Accounting beyond Nigerian Borders”. This session is designed to explore the concept of accounting harmonization via International Accounting Standards/ International Financial Reporting Standards ( IAS/IFRS) and their widespread adoption. It further aims to broaden the knowledge of members on effects of (IAS/IFRS) adoption and enhance understanding on the internationalization process.”

He further explained that, “seasoned intellectuals and professionals have been carefully chosen to treat the various topics embedded in this theme. I enjoin you to utilize this professional session to acquire more knowledge and expertise on financial report preparation for international comparability, sustainability, profitability and cost management”.

Shading light on some issues of importance, especially on Unified Exchange Rate Policy and emerging realities, he said, ” the recent decision of the Federal Government to unify the exchange rates of the naira into one single window is a laudable initiative as the previous multiple exchange regime and it’s rates created room for rent- seeking and arbitrage,” he said.

He explained that these are some of the areas where the Accountants knowledge needed to be broaden and the aims which the MCPD Program seeks to achieve.

He appreciated the Governor and the Government of Gombe State for providing a conducive atmosphere and a warmth reception for the participants to fully partake in the Program successfully.

The Chief Executive Officer of ANAN, Dr. Kayode Olushola Fasua, delivered the vote of thanks appreciating all those who contributed to the success of the program.

Earlier in his address of welcome, the Chairman, ANAN, Gombe Branch who is also the Deputy State Auditor General, Mr Wilson Yahaya, appreciated the officials of the Association for choosing Gombe for the fourth time for the Mandatory Continuing Professional Development Program pointing out that the choice is not unconnected with the concise efforts of Gov. Yahaya, his inclusive style of governance, and the enormous support for the development of Professional Accountants in the state.

He solicited for the assistance of the state government to the association by approving professional allowances to their members, to provide the branch with a vehicle for mobility and to sponsor at least five members each year to attend the World Congress of Accountants (WCOA).
