Governor Otti’s policy of meritocracy
By Charisma Obioha
Meritocracy is the notion of a political system in which economic goods or political power are vested in individual people based on ability and talent, rather than wealth or social class. Advancement in such a system is based on performance, as measured through examination or demonstrated achievement.
The Governor of Abia State, Dr, Alex Otti OFR, who is not only famous but also an iconic financial expert has shown a firm resolve in the above definition through his recent appointments of Commissioners and Special Advisers…
It is unarguable, that the calibre of personalities who would or have already comprised of his cabinet are ladies and gentlemen who have shown an excellent level of competence in their various fields of endeavour.
These recent appointments have kept the opposition in awe whilst the masses are in gratitude. On this issue, the opposition has failed to churn out their usual unfounded criticisms towards every policy or move the Governor has made since he assumed office.
The so called “Ukwa Ngwa” forum or elders who have been wailing with claims of being marginalized in favour of old bende or any other zone are those who envisaged that their political ties with te Governor will always fetch them a position or give them easy passes to fix their allies into the government.
I am certain that Dr Otti meticulously handpicked any appointee in his cabinet and has subtly refused to let any person or group of persons to cow him into doing their bidding.
Surprisingly, this policy of his has kept those who claim to be “stakeholders” at abeyance judging from the fact that only about 5% of all the appointments always issued through the Chief Press Secretary(Kazie Uko) and or the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity(Ferdinand Ekeoma) were made in consideration of political ties. The rest of the 95% were obviously made based on this policy of meritocracy.
Permit me to assume that the common interest of Abians, when we against all odds, voted and defended our votes during the last gubernatorial election was to ensure that A New Abia embodied with dividends of good governance and democracy is achieved.
If we agree to this postulation of mine, then i will conclude by asserting that the policy of meritocracy is the perfect and most beneficial policy for any governor or government that yearns for the progress of the masses.
