The Network for Advocacy And Good Leadership Initiative, under the leadership of Dr Agodi Kanu, has strongly opposed the recent proposal by the Federal Government of Nigeria to increase electricity tariffs by 40 per cent.

NAGLI leader, made this disclosure in a statement he personally signed which was obtained by our correspondent.

The statement partly read, “We firmly believe that such a significant increase in electricity costs will have detrimental effects on citizens, businesses, and the overall economic well-being of the country. The timing in the unpleasant face of recent removal of fuel subsidy without cushioning palliatives is unpalatable and unpopular.

“The Network for Advocacy And Good Leadership Initiative is a non-partisan organization committed to promoting good governance, advocating for the rights and welfare of citizens, and fostering socio-political development in Nigeria. Our mission is to create an enabling environment for progress and to ensure the well-being of all Nigerians. However, the proposed hike is completely in contrast to our people centered mission and negates good governance.”

Kanu presented nine key points that outline the group’s disapproval of the proposed hike in electricity tariffs, “Financial burden on citizens: A 40 per cent increase in electricity tariffs will place an additional financial burden on already struggling households, thereby further exacerbating their challenges.

“Negative impact on small businesses: Small businesses, which form the backbone of the Nigerian economy, will face increased operational costs, resulting in reduced profitability and potential job losses.

“Reduced access to electricity: Higher tariffs will lead to decreased affordability and accessibility of electricity for many Nigerians, hindering progress and limiting development opportunities.

“Disproportionate impact on vulnerable communities: Low-income households and marginalized communities will be disproportionately affected, leading to increased inequality and social unrest.

“Discouragement of foreign direct investment: Such an abrupt and significant increase in electricity tariffs sends a negative signal to foreign investors, undermining the country’s efforts to attract investments and foster economic growth.

“Lack of transparency and consultation: The decision to hike electricity tariffs lacks transparency and inclusive consultation with relevant stakeholders, denying citizens the opportunity to voice their concerns and propose alternatives.

“Insufficient improvement in service delivery: Despite previous tariff increases, there has been limited improvement in the quality and reliability of electricity supply. Further price escalation without commensurate improvements in service delivery is unjustified.

“Impact on industrial productivity: The proposed tariff hike will raise production costs for industries, making Nigerian products less competitive in regional and international markets, and hampering economic growth.

“The effects of this whole policy somersault will invariably trigger increase in crime because of anticipated hunger and hardship. The less privileged and middle class will be the worst hit,” he said.

NAGLI founder noted that the answer to myriads of challenges in the power sector are in his three antidotes adding, “Sustainable Renewable Energy alternatives: Instead of burdening citizens with increased tariffs, the government should focus on promoting renewable energy sources and investing in sustainable solutions to address the electricity supply challenges.

“Need for prioritisation of customer welfare, rather than burdening consumers with higher tariffs, the government should prioritize customer welfare by addressing issues such as metering, tariff harmonization.

“The distribution companies must be reviewed. Most of them are crude, unethical and nauseating. Issues of disconnection without notice, poor response mechanism and self enrichment of field staff through sharp practices must be dealt with.”

The Network for Advocacy and Good Leadership Initiative urged the Federal Government to reconsider the proposed 40 per cent hike in electricity tariffs. “We call for meaningful engagement with stakeholders, transparency in decision-making processes, and the pursuit of sustainable solutions that prioritize the welfare and economic prosperity of all Nigerians.
“We are all involved and no one is insulated from this unwelcome proposal irrespective of party, tribe and religion. This is one proposal that must never see the light of the day,” the statement partly added.
