Nasarawa State has ended the 2023 3rd edition of the Nasarawa State National Open Karate Championship held at the Dan Yamusa NYSC Orientation Camp, Keffi, as 4th overall best.

According to a press statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development Eche Amos, the state’s team won two Gold and one Bronze medals, respectively, to achieve the feat at the Championship.

Chioma Ani won Gold in the Women’s +68kg Category after defeating her Rivers State’s counterpart in the final.

Saidu Ahmed also won Gold Medal in the Men’s -60kg Category, defeating his opponent from F.C.T., Abuja, while Christabel Daniel, overpowered her counterpart from F.C.T. Abuja, in the -55kg Female’s Category, to clinch the Bronze medal.

The host state, coached by Kingsley Enyie, ended the Championship behind FCT, Abuja, Bayelsa State and Taraba State, accordingly.

A total of 250 athletes, drawn from States of the Federation and other individual Clubs, participated at the five-day long Championship which started from 1st-5th August, 2023.

President of the Nigeria Karate Federation and former Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, Hon. Silas Ali Agara, alongside other critical stakeholders attended the grand finale.

Meanwhile, multiple-medal winning Nasarawa State Karate athlete, Chioma Ani, has been invited by the Nigeria Karate Federation to the National Camp of Nigeria ahead of UFAK Africa Karate Championship coming up later in August in Casablanca, Morocco.

She will join other invitees at the National Camp on Sunday, 6th August, 2023, in Abuja.

Recall that Chioma won Silver Medal for Team Nasarawa at the 2022 National Sports Festival in Asaba, Delta State, and won Bronze medal for Nigeria at the UFAK Africa Karate Championship held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2022.

In a related development, the Permanent Secretary of the Nasarawa State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Chief Barr. Isaac Danladi, has sent a congratulatory message to the State’s athletes for their encouraging performances at the just concluded National Karate Championship, particularly Chioma Ani, over her invitation to the National Camp.

He said the Government will continue to do everything humanly possible to support the State’s athletes for podium appearance.
